Cutting Wood
You need to start the day out with a good breakfast! Two lbs of bacon, 18 eggs, 2 dozen biscuits, tomato juice, egg nog, milk....oh, and just for Mandi - cream cheese brownies!
The guys have been working on a group of about 4 trees that fell after the spring rains this year. To give you some size perspective of this root ball that contained these trees, I had Richter stand next to it. For those of you who know the size of my husband, this root ball was huge! (And no, he was not singing "YMCA!)
Richter and the boys have been working, in their spare time, for the last couple of weeks and weekends just to get all of the branches trimmed so that they could get down to cutting up the trunk of the tree. Just the branches alone netted us two pickup loads of wood.
There is a young couple we know that came to the farm with us so they could stock up on some wood for themselves. They are a very hard working, industrious couple. This was the second tree of the day for them. (Got a picture of the tree falling -- pretty cool!)
A morning of hard work and enough wood to last quite a while! I have a feeling that cutting this wood is going to warm us more than the obligatory two times (You know the old saying cutting wood warms you twice, once cutting it and twice burning it) It still has to be taken home and split and stacked! God is good!
Of course, there are the necessary tools of the trade while you are in the woods cutting -- A Winchester .357 lever action and SKS (because you never know what you are going to run into - they say the mountain lion is back) screwdriver, rope ..... oh, and the chain saw!
Richter said the Lord knew we were going to be more crippled up this year than last, so He had these trees fall over THIS creek the right way, and that he gave us two healthy strapping sons to help cut it and haul it for us. Amen! and Amen! On the other side of this creek it is all uphill and rocky, but the tree fell right into the the meadow where it was easy to get at. And you always come across some unexpected beauty, even after the trees have all turned brown.
Now all we have to do is split it and stack it, which will take a while, since all of us work full-time jobs every day or go to school and work -- but between the 5 of us, it will get done!
I know the country is going through hard times right now, and no one is sure how things are going to turn out at this point, and we could see some hard times for years to come, but as long as there are young men and women like the ones we were with today, unlike those little whiney punks at Occupy Wallstreet who think the world owes them something, this country can make it back to greatness, .

I remember the days of cutting wood, not just for me but for my parents. So I know just what the wood means, not just to provide heat to warm tired bones in the morning before another day of work. It also means peace of mind knowing if things get tough it will be there to keep you warm when the wolves come knocking!!!!
ReplyDeleteI helped one of the other Richters (the older one) cut and stack wood for his house. I am happy to help my brother(s) any way I can. As you said, that wood did warm me more than 2 times. Once in cutting and moving, two when I was in his house and 3 driving home looking at the U S Marine on leave who also helped. Like "ya'all" I may not have the money but boy do I have the famliy.
